Set in a luxury hotel in Dublin, “Albert Nobbs” is a Gosford Park-style “below stairs” drama featuring Glenn Close as a woman in Nineteenth Century Irelandwho disguises herself as a man in order to survive.
Successful publisher Will Atenton (Daniel Craig) quit a job in New York City to relocate his wife, Libby (Rachel Weisz), and two girls to a quaint New England town. But as they settle into their new life, they discover their perfect home was Watch Beneath the Darkness Online For Free the murder scene of a mother and her children. And the entire city believes it was at the hands of the husband who survived.
When Will investigates the tragedy, his only lead comes from Ann Paterson (Naomi Watts), a neighbor who was close to the family that died. As Will and Ann piece together the disturbing puzzle, they discover that the story of the last man to leave Will’s dream house will be just as horrifying to the one who came next.
tortuous and broody to a fault, Chad Feehan’s debut feature (originally titled “Wake,” for reasons that will become painfully apparent) lays out two parallel narratives that will converge only after we have ceased to care. In the first, Paul (Josh Stewart) and Adrienne (Jamie-Lynn Sigler), a young couple en route to Los Angeles, stop at a motel in the Mojave desert for a quickie and a snooze. In the second, a desk clerk at the motel (Chris Browning) — whose Watch Beneath the Darkness Online For Free demeanor alone would give any sane person pause — mysteriously appears as a sad-sack security guard with a shamelessly unfaithful wife (Angela Featherstone).
Supernatural signifiers disturb Paul’s sleep and the film’s persistent gloom: a woman and a Bible verse appear and disappear; a radio and a jukebox play only the Motown song “Devil in His Heart.” Random flickers of style (mainly supplied by Jason Blount’s meaty photography) fail to counteract a laughable plot device (embodied by Afemo Omilami) who hints at shameful secrets in Paul’s frat-boy past. At which point only the possibility of Dana Carvey’s Church Lady popping up to inquire, “Could it be... Satan?” kept me watching until the bitter, bloody end.
